An Investment in Youth, Natural Resources and Brighter Futures The Southern California Mountain Foundation has long valued our partnership with Nestlé Waters’ Arrowhead® Brand Mountain Spring Water because of our shared commitment to sustainability and stewardship of our local lands. That is why we are so grateful to receive Arrowhead’s generous donation of 90 acres of land in the Angeles Oaks area of the San Bernardino Mountains. The 90 acres donated by Arrowhead will become invaluable to our organization's environmental initiatives. Chief among them is to provide outdoor training in a natural setting for our Urban Conservation Corps program. The Urban Conservation Corps is a workforce development program that offers young men and women ages 18-25 the chance to serve in the Southern California Mountains and develop employment skills through hands on conservation and restoration projects that promote stewardship of the environment. In addition to increasing job readiness, these young people help the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other public land managers to create healthier public lands.
A secondary use will be to stage environmental education programming from this outdoor vantage point for students and families. This will help create a fascination and respect for nature and a life-long commitment to environmental stewardship. It is incumbent on each and every one of us to work together to foster a greater respect for our treasured public lands, to connect more youth to nature and to help sustain our forestlands for future generations. This new land will help create opportunities for new partnerships, like the one we have enjoyed with Arrowhead Water, which helps us connect more communities and individuals to our public lands. The SCMF is a local community-based organization and leader in conservation, environmental education and responsible recreation initiatives on public lands since 1992. Some 23 years later, our co-founders are still involved and stand committed to environmental stewardship in the communities where they live and work. At Arrowhead Water, the baton was passed to Larry Lawrence, National Resource Manager, to serve on our board to help direct the mission and impact we achieve and fundraise to build capacity and provide program support. We are excited to see how these vital programs will continue to grow and offer more young people opportunities to serve their communities. Partnerships like the one we have with Arrowhead Water further our efforts to increase the connection that young people feel with their community, their environment, and to their own futures. When they care about all three, it benefits us all. Photo credit: Southern California Mountains Foundation.
